Cardio is the only way to lose fat, but weight lifting will tone the muscles under the fat, crouching / slots are a good idea. If my knees hurt verify, you have form is correct (the weight in your heels, do not let the knees bend at the toes). Even if you are not a burden, but by many repetitions, try a low weight and not less repetitions and 3 sets of 12-15 reps.
